If you want to explore the world of web development, the markup language is a word you may often hear. But have you ever wondered what markup language really means? Or what rules do markup languages play when it comes to web development?

Well, the term ‘Markup languages’ may seem a bit complicated, but once you know their functionality, it will give you a lot of ease in understanding the fact.

This article will cover the different types of Markup languages, what they mean and how they work.

What Is Markup Language?

Markup simply refers to annotating computer text documents. Moreover, the markup language is used by people to give the computer the proper instruction on what type of document it needs to showcase.  The markup language is human-readable.

Think about your high school days when you used to keep notes and highlight the important lines from your textbook. Why? So that you can revise them before the exam. Moreover, those are the most important lines from your textbook.

Now, we can compare that to markup language as well. But how? People use markup language to let the computer easily understand different documents. Moreover, with the help of the markup language, you can see the formatted text and documents.

In other words, if you want to structure your website or web pages, the element that can play a decent role is the markup language. So, when it comes to developing a website, what web developers prioritize the most is the markup language.

What Does a Markup Language Consist of?

Markup language consists of three core elements or tags. And if you wonder what tags are? They are responsible for showcasing HTML elements in particular documents. However, the core three tags are;

  • Opening tag
  • Element tag
  • Closing tag.

Everything that takes place between the opening and closing tags is something you can see as a document. That’s why the computer won’t show the document if there is an absence of opening and closing tags.

Now, we would like to explore the markup language we often use. However, the most common markup language includes;

  • HTML – Hypertext Markup Language
  • XML – eXtensible Markup Language
  • XHTML – eXtensible Hypertext Markup Language
  • KML – Keyhole Markup Language
  • SGML – Standard Generalized Markup Language

Moreover, these markup languages come into action in different stages of the web development process. So, if you want to develop a website, you should at least have a basic idea of the markup languages I just presented above.

Do you ever think about the behind the scene procedure of every readable document you see online? Well, you do not feel the importance of thinking so. However, as you have come here to know the purpose of markup language, the knowledge will help you.

The markup languages usually let the online document read easier by people. For example, if you dive into a website, you will have different content organized in several layout styles. However, this is the result of markup languages.  The markup languages also play a decent role in structuring any website.

However, in this blog, we will reinforce the purpose of markup languages.

What Are the Markup Languages

Have you ever heard the name ‘HTML’? Nonetheless, HTML is a markup language which means Hyper Text Markup Language in its full form. The Markup language consists of some tags and elements that make the document easy to read. Furthermore, to be more precise, Markup language combines tags and elements that produce formatted, annotated and human-readable documents.

However, HTML is not only a markup language. But, it is the most common and popular markup language used by web developers. Some of the other types of markup languages are:

  • Extensible Markup Language (XML)
  • Generalized Markup Language (GML)
  • Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML)

Nevertheless, every markup language has its unique characteristic and nature. Besides, there are different uses as well.

The first ever markup language was introduced in  1967, and it was the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). IBM used to use markup languages to process big data inside their business operation.

On the other hand, the most popular and effective markup language, Hyper Text Markup Language, was brought to light in 1993. Since then, it has been the ultimate choice for web developers to structure any website.

As I mentioned earlier, the markup languages contain some tags and elements. The tags and elements are written with the standard letter and specialized symbols. For example, the <p> and <p/> are one of two tags which means paragraph.

Some people mess up markup languages with programming languages. But, they are not the same. The markup languages are static. On the other hand, the programming languages are dynamic.

The interesting fact is that if you want to create a basic website, you don’t need to learn programming languages. Instead, markup languages like HTML are bare enough.

Once you know the functions of some of the most common tags and elements of markup languages, you can start building your website.

Purpose of Markup Languages

If you are passionate about creating websites and web pages, you can use the markup languages best. That’s why most web developers start their web development journey with HTML, which is more efficient than any other markup language.

No matter what type of web document you want to format, once you know how to use the markup languages, you will find a lot of ease.

So, we hope you have found this article pretty much fascinating, haven’t you?
